PRESS RELEASE: Royal Society for the Protection of Birds appoints Pitmans Trustees

Pitmans Trustees (PTL), a leading independent trustee and governance services provider, today announced that it has been appointed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). The account will be managed by PTL’s new Specialist Charity Unit (announced in August) which focuses exclusively on Charity pension schemes.

RSPB is a £102 million scheme with approximately 1050 active members, 660 deferred and 300 pensioners.

Melanie Cusack, Client Director and Head of the PTL Charity unit, commented: “The specialist unit has got off to a flying start and we now have eight schemes within it. The needs of this sector are distinctive and, all too often, not adequately addressed by the market. We have worked hard to gain valuable insight into this space through other work we have done with charities and this new appointment demonstrates our unique strength in this area. We are particularly pleased with this appointment as the scheme has never had an independent trustee before.”

Alan Sharpe, Director of Finance at RSPB, commented:  “We became convinced over the past year or so of the potential benefits to the RSPB Pension Scheme of an independent trustee; not least to help manage potential conflicts of interest arising from trustees having several ‘hats’ (some are also charity trustees). We explored several options before appointing PTL and were impressed by the skills and experience of the team as well as the practical manner in which they apply them.”
