Pitmans Trustees Ltd helps to launch an Association of Member Nominated Trustees

13 July 2010

Pitmans Trustees Limited (PTL), a leading independent trustee and governance services provider, announced today that it is helping to launch an Association of Member Nominated Trustees and Directors.

Commenting, Richard Butcher, Managing Director at PTL said, “Member Nominated Trustees (MNTs) and Directors (MNDs) are legally no different from other trustees but they do face some unique challenges as a result of their being nominated by other beneficiaries and by their limited, typically three to six years, term of office.

Over the last six months a number of MNT/Ds have told us that they would really appreciate a forum for discussing these challenges. Somewhere they can share experience and ideas. We work with MNT/Ds on a majority of our appointments and we are very supportive of their role as we believe that they create the intimate link between a pension schemes governance and its membership. As a result, we have decided to provide the initial impetus and logistical support to help launch an association for them.”

Butcher added, “Our role will be to help get the association off of the ground. After that it should be run by its members for its members.

The first steps are to gauge how widespread the interest is and to collect views on how it could work. We are planning to host a founding committee lunch in London with a limited number of MNT/Ds in September to discuss these points. We already have some delegates for that meeting but are looking for more.”
